Lathe vs Milling Machine

Lathe machines have the capacity of creating diameters of various sizes. There is a rotation of the material with the assistance of the material tool. The tool is joined to the pole tool. While milling machines help in the rotation of cutting tools. The materials are positioned in a fixture. They utilize cylindrical tools such as drills and cutters which help in removal of material from the final product.

Tools used
In a lathe, the primary tool used is cutting insert which is utilized by the tip for cutting and shaping the exterior of molding material. This kind of tool is not used in the milling machine. One of the standard types of milling machines is the end mill which is positioned on a spindle. The rotation can be done at various speed levels which depend a lot on the type of materials utilized for the purpose. The spindle portion is utilised if end mills are used in milling machines.

Important considerations
For cutting materials in cylindrical shapes, you have to choose a lathe. It works efficiently and helps in the easier cutting of material. Drilling is possible only on the center lathe so if you require drilling at other positions you will be better off using a this type of machine. If you need angled cuts or any other non-cylindrical shapes it is better to use a milling machine. They are used for parts which are symmetrical along their origin. The lathe machine can be used to create bowls, vases, woodwind musical devices, baseball bats, gun barrels, surfaces of metal and bolt threads. There is more scope in a choice of materials while using milling machines. They are more versatile than lathe machines. They are used for making trophies, car parts, gears, and fixtures of buildings. They have the capability of creating complex geometric shapes such as quadcopter styles.

Setting up
The setting up of a lathe machine is easier. There is less precision involved. The clamping jaws should be positioned at an equal distance from the middle of the tool. This helps in the elimination of errors of any kind. While using the type of machine, measurement of the fixture is necessary. Utilize the dial indicator on the shaft and tighten up the retention bolts to ensure a straight surface. Make adjustments wherever they are needed.
